Eric Wetherell:  Compositions

 

As a composer, Eric Wethetrell's most recent works have included:

 

  • The Snow Child, an opera in two acts, based on the novel of the same title by American author, Eowyn Ivey, which, in turn, is an adaptation of the old folk tale The Snow Maiden.

  • A Christmas Cantata, for female voices. Written for Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol

  • A Foreign Field, a three-act opera based on the story of young British soldiers during the First World War on the Franco-Belgian border

  • Bushes and Briars, a choral work commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia

  • George Romney, the Painter's Eye   -   the setting of a poem for soprano written for the centenary of the Lake District painter, George Romney

  • Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Strings

  • The Diaries of Adam and Eve, an hour-long work for chorus, full orchestra and two narrators, based upon two Mark Twain short stories

  • Suite: Bristol Quay, for string orchestra

  • We Are the Women, a song cycle for soprano and mezzo which focuses on the First World War from the perspective of the women left behind

  • Portrait of a City, a short piece for wind band painting a protrait of the city of Bristol

  • A Matching of Powers, a twenty minute piece for symphony orchestra, soprano, and baritone

  • He has also rescored almost all the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas for chamber orchestra, ideal for small theatre pit spaces and these can be hired by contacting him at his email address  -  ericwetherell@hotmail.com

  • Further rescoring for small chamber orchestra include the operas Carmen, Macbeth, A Masked Ball and The Tales of Hoffmann. These are also available for hire

 

He works regularly with his wife, the poet Elizabeth Major, and their most recent work is the opera, “The Snow Child”, which is due to receive its first performance in September 2014.
